Video Tariq Trotter Left Jimmy Fallon Hanging at the Black No More Stage Door

The Roots rapper sat in the guest chair on The Tonight Show to talk about the Off-Broadway musical he co-wrote and stars in at The New Group.

Tariq Trotter, well-known as the rapper Black Thought, stopped by The Tonight Show to talk with host Jimmy Fallon about how he's been missing everyone on the show since he's been away from The Roots, which serves as the house band on the late night show. (Well...almost everyone. Poor Jimmy.)

Trotter is currently starring as Dr. Junius Crookman in Black No More, the new musical adapted from George S. Schuyler’s 1931 Afrofuturist novel of the same name, in previews at The New Group. Trotter, who also provides lyrics and co-wrote the music for the piece, chats with Fallon about the show and why he left Fallon waiting by a dumpster at the stage door of The Pershing Square Theatre Center while he exited through the front door. Watch the clip above.

Set during the Harlem Renaissance, the musical tells the story of Max Disher (played by Brandon Victor Dixon), who’s eager to try the mysterious machine invented by Dr. Junius Crookman (Trotter) that guarantees to “solve the American race problem"—by turning Black people white.

The cast also features Tony winner Lillias White (Chicago, The Life), Tony nominee Jennifer Damiano (Next to Normal), Tamika Lawrence (If/Then), Theo Stockman (American Psycho), Tracy Shayne (Bronx Bombers), Tony nominee Ephraim Sykes (Ain't Too Proud, Hamilton), Tony nominee Howard McGillin (The Mystery of Edwin Drood), and Gaelen Gilliland (Legally Blonde).

Directed by Scott Elliott with choreography by Tony winner Bill T. Jones, Black No More features lyrics by Trotter; music by Trotter, Anthony Tidd, James Poyser, and Tony winner Daryl Waters; and a book by John Ridley, as well as music supervision, orchestrations, and vocal arrangements by Waters. Opening night is set for February 15.
