Chicago News Stage Adaptation of Disney’s Bedknobs and Broomsticks Sets Chicago World Premiere Chicago Shakespeare Theater will present the expanded stage adaptation of the 1971 film as part of its 2018–2019 season.

A stage adaptation of Disney’s 1971 live action-animated hybrid musical Bedknobs and Broomsticks will premiere next summer as part of Chicago Shakespeare’s 2018–2019 season.

Angela Lansbury starred in the family-friendly adventure film, which featured a score by Mary Poppins songwriters Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. Book writer Brian Hill and composer-lyricist Neil Bartram, whose musical The Story of My Life played a brief Broadway run in 2009, will contribute additional material for the stage adaptation. The show will also include “lost” Sherman Brothers songs that were not in the original.

Rachel Rockwell (Ride the Cyclone) will direct and choreograph the world premiere, running May 30–July 28, 2019.

The season also includes Peter Pan, A Musical Adventure, a new version of the J.M. Barrie classic featuring a score by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, who adapted Disney’s Mary Poppins for the stage. Amber Mak will direct and choreograph the production. Performances run June 27–August 19.

Also planned is the North American premiere of Jessica Swale’s Olivier Award-winning play with music Nell Gwynn, directed by Christopher Luscombe (September 20–November 4); the National Theatre of Great Britain’s revival of An Inspector Calls, staged by Stephen Daldry (February 19–March 10); and a new production of Hamlet from Chicago Shakespeare Theater Artistic Director Barbara Gaines.
