Gavin Creel isn’t a new subject of Seth Rudetsky’s deconstructions (click here for more), but the above video marks the first time Rudetsky has deconstructed a Tony-winning performance of the Broadway favorite.
Creel won the 2017 Tony for his work as Cornelius Hackl in the Tony-winning Best Revival Hello, Dolly!, which stars Bette Midler in the title role. Now, Rudetsky compiles his years of Creel knowledge to break down the vocal quirks and flourishes that elevate his performance in the Act 1 showstopper “Put On Your Sunday Clothes.”
From nods to his performance in Thoroughly Modern Millie—for which Creel earned his first Tony nomination—to how his role in The Book of Mormon helps him in Dolly, Rudetsky connects all the dots.
What’s more, he breaks down the ensemble vocals, vocal arrangements, and Tony-nominated orchestrations (by Larry Hochman) featured on the cast album.
