With his new revival of Sunset Blvd open on Broadway and looking like it may well repeat the success it saw in London's West End, Andrew Lloyd Webber is looking forward to his next new musical, per a report in Deadline. The outlet is reporting that the Tony- and Olivier-winning composer is working on a new musical currently titled The Illusionist, loosely adapted from the 2006 film of the same name.
The project is reportedly in early stages, with just a few songs being finished. Deadline says Lloyd Webber is planning for Olivier-winning Sunset Blvd director Jamie Lloyd to helm this new musical, too. Lloyd has also previously directed a revival of Lloyd Webber's Evita, for Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in 2019; Lloyd Webber also said that stripped down production of Evita will play next summer in the West End). The Illusionist's book is reportedly written by Lloyd Webber and the film's screenwriter, Chris Terrio—with British songwriter Bruno Major also on board to work on the songs. According to Deadline, one of the project's major upcoming hurdles is finding an illusion creator to provide the show's planned coups de théâtre.
Though Lloyd Webber's musical reportedly has very little to do with the source material's plot, The Illusionist centers on a turn-of-the-century Viennese magician and his love for a woman from a higher social class. The Cats and Phantom of the Opera composer told Deadline that the score will be "operatic."
No production timeline or plans for a premiere location have yet been shared.
