Empanada Loca, which was written by Mark specifically for Rubin-Vega, is inspired by the legend of murderous barber Sweeney Todd. Rubin-Vega, whose other Broadway credits include A Streetcar Named Desire, Les Misérables and Anna in the Tropics, plays Dolores, a woman living deep under Manhattan in an abandoned subway tunnel. Dolores lives by one rule only: eat or be eaten.

Performances of Empanada Loca, also directed by Mark, run through Nov. 8 with an official opening night set for Oct. 21 at Labyrinth’s Bank Street Theater. Following her Oct. 4 preformance, Rubin-Vega will discuss the challenges an actor faces in doing a one-woman show. 

Empanada Loca is the second in a trilogy of solo plays written by Mark, the first being Another Medea, which featured Tony nominee Tom Hewitt. 

The creative team for Empanada Loca includes David Meyer (sets), Bradley King (lights), Ryan Rumery (sound) and Lily Perlmutter (production stage manager).
