Opera star and recent Tony Award nominee Renée Fleming will star in the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner Kevin Puts’ The Brightness of Light, singing the role of Georgia O’Keeffe. The new opera, inspired by letters between the artist and her husband Alfred Stieglitz, is part of Boston Symphony Orchestra's recently announced 2019 Tanglewood season.

The opera was written specifically with Fleming and baritone Rod Gilfry in mind; the two will perform the piece, under the baton of Boston Symphony Orchestra Music Director Andris Nelsons, July 20 in the Shed. Additionally, Fleming, who is also set to lead a London presentation of The Light in the Piazza next summer, has been named the Koussevitzky Artist for the 2019 season and will sing with the Emerson String Quartet July 24 at Tanglewood’s Ozawa Hall.

Nelsons will also conduct a concert performance of Wagner’s Die Walküre over two nights (July 27 and 28) with a cast featuring Christine Goerke (who will also sing Brünnhilde at the Metropolitan Opera this season), Simon O’Neill, James Rutherford, Amber Wagner, and Ain Anger.

Additional highlights include Nelson conducting the Verdi Requiem July 13 with Kristine Opolais, Oksana Volkova, Jonathan Tetelman, and Ryan Speedo Green; a trio of Boston Pops concerts celebrating John Williams; and a one-night-only Bach recital from Yo-Yo Ma.

Tickets for the 2019 season will go on sale February 10. For the complete lineup, visit BSO.org.
