The Broadway run of Real Women Have Curves finally has a Broadway home: the James Earl Jones Theatre. The stage musical based on Josefina López's play will be the next tenant following the limited run of Left on Tenth, with performances beginning April 1, 2025, ahead of an April 27 opening night as previously announced.
The project is being helmed by Sergio Trujillo, who's directing and choreographing. The musical is adapted from López's 1993 play, which also had a 2002 film version. Joy Huerta and Benjamin Velez have written the music and lyrics with a book by Lisa Loomer with Nell Benjamin. The work follows a first-generation child of Mexican immigrants torn between joining the family garment business or embarking on her own dream of attending college in NYC.
No casting for the Broadway bow has been revealed.
Nadia DiGiallonardo is the musical's music supervisor, with further creative team members to be announced.
“In 1982, Fran and I opened two Tony-nominated revivals on Broadway, one being Othello starring James Earl Jones, which would go on to win our first Tony Award,” says producer Barry Weissler in a statement. “Returning to this theatre—which now carries Jones’ name—is a beautiful full-circle moment for our careers over 40 years later, and we can’t wait to bring the story of Real Women Have Curves to life within those walls alongside our esteemed partner Jack Noseworthy.”
Led by Fran and Barry Weissler and Noseworthy, the producing team also includes Peggy Koenig, Stan Ponte, John Gore Organization, Ira Pittelman, Stacie and Steven Weisbrot, Michael Valdes, Michael P. Kruke, The Nederlander Organization, Ramesh Narasimhan, Emerald Drive, HGH Productions, the Independent Presenters Network, Jared King, Peter May, James R. Schnepper, Jayne Baron Sherman, Alicia Menendez, and the Shubert Organization.
