The initial broadcast, which was seen by 15.6 million viewers, makes the TV film the most-watched movie on broadcast TV since CBS' 2011 airing of "Jesse Stone: Innocence Lost," according to Deadline.com. The Parton film also bested the ratings of the NBC telecast of The Wiz! Live.
The two-hour film, which is set in Tennessee's Great Smokey Mountains in 1955, is "based on the inspiring true story of living legend Dolly Parton’s remarkable upbringing," according to NBC. "This...movie special takes place inside the tight-knit Parton family as they struggle to overcome devastating tragedy and discover the healing power of love, faith, and a raggedy patchwork coat that helped make Parton who she is today."
The cast includes Jennifer Nettles as Parton’s mother, Avie Lee Parton; Gerald McRaney as Grandpa Jake Owens; Ricky Schroder as Dolly’s father, Lee Parton; and Alyvia Alyn as nine-year-old Dolly Parton.
