Polls Our Readers Name the Shows They Can't Wait to See This Season The 2015-16 Broadway season includes many exciting new productions, as well as some highly anticipated revivals. Among them: Waitress with music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, Deaf West's Spring Awakening, and Lin-Manuel Miranda's recently-opened Hamilton. Playbill.com took to social media to ask its readers which shows they're most excited to see.

Waitress:

‪Melanie Gomez: I would love so much to see Waitress on Broadway! ‪Sara Bareilles is one of my all time favorite artists and I know her music and lyrics must be fantastic. It also has Jessie Mueller and is directed by Diane Paulus, so really, it has the women in theatre trifecta!

‪Ingrid de Beus: Looking forward to Waitress! Although I probably won't be able to make it to the A.R.T. while it's there, so I'm hoping to see it wherever else it surfaces!

 

Waitress, a new musical based on the film of the same name, features music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, and a book by Jessie Nelson. The original screenplay was written by Adrienne Shelly. Waitress tells the story of Jenna, a pregnant, but unhappily married waitress in the Deep South. When Jenna meets a newcomer to her town, she falls into an unlikely relationship as a last attempt at happiness. Jessie Mueller is currently starring as Jenna at American Repertory Theatre in Massachusetts, with Keala Settle and Jeanna de Waal as her coworkers Becky and Dawn, respectively. Waitress recently announced its transfer to Broadway for spring 2016. The first preview will be in March 2016, with an April 2016 opening date at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.

Allegiance:

‪Betty Cole: I'm most looking forward to Allegiance. I've followed the show's journey and am so glad it finally made it to Broadway.

‪Catie Maureen: Allegiance. I've been reading tons of books on WWII lately, and I'm truly looking forward to seeing and hearing this story. The music that I've heard so far has been beautiful, and the cast is wonderful!

‪Aya Nakashima: Allegiance! So excited to see that story told on a Broadway stage.

Allegiance, a new musical, features music and lyrics by Jay Kuo, and a book by Jay Kuo, Lorenzo Thione, and Marc Acito. Allegiance is an epic story of love, war, and heroism set during the Japanese American internment during World War II. It follows the story of the Kimura family in the weeks and years following Pearl Harbor, as they are relocated from their farm in Salinas, California to the Heart Mountain internment camp in the rural plains of Wyoming. Allegiance stars George Takei, Lea Salonga, and Telly Leung. The cast also includes Katie Rose Clarke, Michael K. Lee, Christopheren Nomura, and Greg Watanabe. Allegiance will play its first preview at the Longacre Theatre on Oct. 6, and officially open on Broadway on Nov. 8.

Hamilton:

‪Maddie Williams: Can't wait for Hamilton, so exciting to see more POC in featured roles!

Hamilton Lin-Manuel Miranda's new musical about founding father, Alexander Hamilton, opened on Broadway on Aug. 6 to rave reviews. The new hip-hop musical was inspired by a biography of Alexander Hamilton, which was written by Ron Chernow. Hamilton is currently playing at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

Spring Awakening:

Jan Taylor: Spring Awakening because we love Deaf West and Big River was amazing.

‪Evan Dalton: The return of Spring Awakening! It's my favorite show already, so to add in ASL creates an even more beautiful, touching story!

 

The Deaf West revival of Spring Awakening puts a new spin on the coming-of-age musical by adding sign language to help tell the story. The original 2006 production of Spring Awakening won eight Tony Awards. Spring Awakening features a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik. Casting for the 2015 revival was recently announced. Click here to read an interview with Deaf actor, who plays Moritz Stiefel. Spring Awakening will begin previews on Sep. 8, and officially open at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on Sep. 27.

Amazing Grace, a new musical based on the awe-inspiring story behind the writing of "Amazing Grace" by John Newton, features music and lyrics by Christopher Smith, and a book by Christopher Smith and Arthur Giron. Amazing Grace stars Josh Young as John Newton. It is currently playing at the Nederlander Theatre.

Dames At Sea:

‪Cheryl Simon: Most looking forward to seeing Dames at Sea because you can never have too many tapping feet on any given stage!

 

 

The Broadway revival of Dames At Sea starring Eloise Kropp, Mara Davi, and Lesli Margherita, features music by Jim Wise and a book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller. Dames At Sea tells the story of Ruby, a performer who steps off a bus from Utah and right into her first Broadway show. Before the opening night curtain is to rise, the cast learns their theatre is being demolished. So Ruby and the cast, with the help of some adoring sailors, set a plan in motion to perform the show on a naval battleship. Dames At Sea will play its first preview on Sep. 24, and officially open at the Helen Hayes Theatre on Oct. 22.

Fiddler on the Roof:

‪Charlie Siedenburg: I'm getting my handkerchief ready for (holding back tears) when ‪Danny Burstein returns to the stage as Tevye in Fiddler.

Pam Muzyka: Fiddler on the Roof!

The Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof starring Danny Burstein as Tevye the Milkman, features music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and a book by Joseph Stein. Fiddler, inspired by the stories of Sholom Alecheim, concerns Tevye and his daughters, who are yearning for something new even as great changes are happening in the world outside of their village of Anatevka. Fiddler will play its first preview on Nov. 12, and officially open at the Broadway Theatre on Dec. 17.

School of Rock:

‪Alessandro Venanzoni: School of Rock

 

 

School of Rock, a new musical based on the film of the same name, features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Glenn Slater, and a book by Julian Fellowes. Alex Brightman is set to star as Dewey Finn, a would-be rock star turned elementary school music teacher. School of Rock will play its first preview on Nov. 9, and officially open at the Winter Garden Theatre on Dec. 6.

She Loves Me:

Jenna Rose: She Loves Me and Shuffle Along because the casts of those two are going to kill it.

 

 

Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of She Loves Me will star Laura Benanti, Josh Radnor, Jane Krakowski, Gavin Creel, and Michael McGrath. The show features music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and a book by Joe Masteroff. She Loves Me tells the story of Amalia and Georg, two parfumerie clerks who aren't exactly the best of friends. Constantly bumping heads while on the job, these coworkers can't seem to find common ground. Little do they know, the anonymous romantic pen pals they've been falling for are each other. She Loves Me will begin previews on Feb. 5, 2016, officially open on Mar. 3. The show will play a limited engagement at Studio 54.

Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed is a new musical featuring music from the original Broadway production of Shuffle Along. The show will star Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Billy Porter. Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed features music by Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle, and a book by George C. Wolfe. The new musical gives a backstage look about the events that led to the creation of the groundbreaking Eubie Blake – Noble Sissle musical Shuffle Along. Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed will play its first preview on Mar. 14, 2016 and officially open at the Music Box Theatre on Apr. 21.

Chance Nichols: The new Noises Off!

Roundabout Theatre Company's production of Michael Frayn's Noises Off will play its first preview on Dec. 17 and officially open at the American Airlines Theatre on Jan. 14, 2016. Andrea Martin will star. The production is directed by Jeremy Herrin.

Paul Martinsky: China Doll

China Doll, written by David Mamet, will star Al Pacino and Fran Kranz. The production is directed by Pam MacKinnon. China Doll will play its first preview on Oct. 21, and officially open at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on Nov. 19.

 

Misery based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, will star Bruce Willis and Laurie Metcalf. The production is directed by Will Frears. Misery will plays its first preview on Oct. 22, and officially open at the Broadhurst Theatre on Nov. 15.
