Pasadena Playhouse's production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Sunday in the Park With George officially opens at the California theatre February 19 after beginning performances February 14. The run will continue through March 19.
The cast is led by Graham Phillips (13, Riverdale, The Good Wife) as George Seurat/George and Krystina Alabado (Mean Girls, American Psycho) as Dot/Marie, alongisde Michael Manuel (Our Town at South Coast Repertory) as Jules/Bob, Emily Tyra (Nice Work If You Can Get It) as Yvonne/Naomi, and Liz Larsen (Beautiful) as Old Lady/Blair.
The company also includes Armand Akbari as Soldier #2/Ensemble, Jenni Barber as Celeste #2/Waitress, Allison Belinkoff as Female Swing, Erica Gonzalez as Louise, Brian Calì as Boatman/Lee, Marc Ginsburg as Ensemble, Jennie Greenberry as Nurse, Savannah L. Jackson as Ensemble, Trevor James as Soldier/Alex, Robert Knight as Louis/Charles, Deborah Lew as Frieda/Betty, Matthew McCoy as Male Swing, Alexandra Melrose as Mrs./Harriet, Brianna Pember as Ensemble, Juliana Sloan as Celeste #1/Waitress, Jimmy Smagula as Mr./Billy, and Jason Michael Snow as Franz/Dennis. Casting is by The Telsey Office's Ryan Bernard Tymensky and Rose Bochner.
The production re-creates the 2017 Broadway revival production, with Sarna Lapine (niece to Sunday book writer and original director James) again at the helm. She has reunited her creative team from the earlier run, including scenic designer Beowulf Boritt, costume designer Clint Ramos, lighting designer Ken Billington, and projection designer Tal Yarden. New for the Pasadena run are sound designers Danny Erdberg and Ursula Kwong-Brown and wig designer Christopher Enlow. The musical is choreographed by Alison Solomon with musical direction by Andy Einhorn. Lisa Ann Chernoff is production stage manager with Kaleigh Bernier and Mikayla Bettner as assistant stage managers.
Sunday in the Park With George opened on Broadway, starring Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters, in 1984, subsequently receiving Tony Awards for Best Scenic Design and Best Lighting Design. The Pulitzer Prize for Drama followed in 1985.
