Start spreading the news, they're leaving today.... Well, not today, but the Broadway musical New York, New York is leaving abruptly. The musical—which featured music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, and additional lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda—has announced that it will close July 30. The show made the announcement just a week before the closing date. When it closes, New York, New York will have played 33 preview performances and 110 regular performances.
Said lead producers Sonia Friedman and Tom Kirdahy in a statement: “We would like to thank the extraordinarily gifted and committed performers who have been a dream to work with, alongside all of the friends—John Kander, David Thompson, Sharon Washington, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the sublime orchestra, the unwaveringly dedicated creative, production and administrative teams, the backstage staff and technicians, all of whom were led by the visionary Susan Stroman. And of course, we will be forever grateful to our fiercely committed and passionate co-producing and investing community, who enabled us all to bring this show to life."
It was previously announced that New York, New York will embark on a national tour in 2025. The cast album was released June 23 and is currently available.
With nine nominations, New York, New York was tied with & Juliet and Shucked as the second-most Tony nominated production of the season. At the June 11 ceremony, the show took only Best Scenic Design of a Musical, for Beowulf Boritt. That, plus the show's high production costs, and steadily decreasing box office revenue (it finished last week at $692,050.53) meant the musical could not sustain itself through the summer.
New York, New York is loosely based on the 1977 film directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro. It features some Kander and Ebb deep cuts, as well as songs from the film (including its well-known title theme). It also had new songs written by Kander and Miranda.
The musical is set in Manhattan in the days after World War II. A collection of artists has dreams as big and diverse as the city itself, among them Francine Evans, a young singer just off the bus from Philly, destined for greatness. At least, until she encounters New York native Jimmy Doyle, a brilliant but disillusioned musician.
The musical's all-star creative team is led by five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman, who directs and choreographs the production with music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, a book by David Thompson and co-written by Sharon Washington, and additional lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Currently starring in the Broadway premiere are 2023 Tony nominee Colton Ryan and Anna Uzele, leading the cast as Jimmy Doyle and Francine Evans, respectively. They're joined by Clyde Alves as Tommy Caggiano, John Clay III as Jesse Webb, Janet Dacal as Sofia Diaz, Ben Davis as Gordon Kendrick, Oliver Prose as Alex Mann, Angel Sigala as Mateo Diaz, and Emily Skinner as Madame Veltri.
Sam Davis leads the New York, New York music team as music supervisor and arrangements, with orchestrations by Daryl Waters and Davis, vocal arrangements by David Loud, music direction by Alvin Hough, Jr., and music coordination by Kristy Norter.
The production features scenic design by Beowulf Boritt, costume design by Donna Zakowska, lighting design by Ken Billington, sound design by Kai Harada, projection design by Christopher Ash and Boritt, hair and wig design by Sabana Majeed, and makeup design by Michael Clifton. Casting is by Jim Carnahan and Jason Thinger, with Johnny Milani serving as production stage manager. Spanish translations and additional text are by Michael León.
