The world premiere of Starter for Ten, a new musical, begins at the Bristol Old Vic February 29. The production, which will run through March 30, is directed by Charlie Parham.
Based on the coming-of-age novel by David Nicholls, Starter For Ten is set in 1980s Bristol during the legendary British quiz show University Challenge. The book was previously adapted into a 2006 film starring James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch, James Corden, and Rebecca Hall.
The musical stars Adam Bregman as the Southend-born, Bristol-bound undergraduate Brian, and Eubha Akilade as Rebecca. They are joined by Stephenson Ardern-Sodje as Spencer, Miracle Chance as Lucy, Emily Lane as Alice, and Will Jennings as Patrick.
Produced by Antic Productions, Bristol Old Vic, Longshot Films and Playtone, Starter for Ten has a book and lyrics co-written by Emma Hall and Charlie Parham. The '80s-inspired score and lyrics are composed by the queer, pop-punk composers Tom Rasmussen and Hatty Carman.
The Bristol Old Vic production features set and costume design by Olivier nominee Frankie Bradshaw, lighting design by Jai Morjaria and casting by Will Burton for GBC.
