Black Theatre Coalition and Creating Color In Music have announced that Hair will be the second concert staging of their partnership, following a sold out concert presentation of Hello Dolly!. The concert, set for May 23 at 7 PM, will feature an all-Black cast performing music from the 1969 classic at The Stonewall Inn.
The cast of Hair will include Anna Anderson, LaDonna Burns, Taylor Fagins, Paula Galloway, Skylar Gamble, Hunter Hollingsworth-Harris, Trisha Jeffrey, Taylor Pattie, Kwame Michael Remy, Jasmine Michelle Smith, and Jeffery C. White.
The concert will be directed by Amy Marie Haven (former associate artistic director of San Francisco’s African-American Shakespeare Company and current producing fellow at The Music Man on Broadway), and music directed by John Bronston (former musical director of the North American tour of Hair and current music direction fellow at Tina on Broadway).
The Creating in Color Concert Series produces concerts that are performed and helmed by Black artists, using music from the American musical theatre canon regardless of whether it was written to be performed by Black artists, with the goal of expanding what Blackness can be on Broadway.
Black Theatre Coalition Fellowships are one-year placements specific to the opening or ongoing operations of Broadway productions. Each Fellowship provides a $50,000 annual salary, and the opportunity to participate in the efforts of mounting a Broadway production. The Fellowship also provides mentorship and guidance from Black professionals currently working in the industry. As of 2022, BTC has more than 30 Fellows placed throughout the industry. Applications for the next class of Fellows are currently open.
