Nathan Lane's First Pictures From Home Wig Was a Look: 'Like Superman's Father Jor-El' | Playbill

Video Nathan Lane's First Pictures From Home Wig Was a Look: 'Like Superman's Father Jor-El'

The Pictures From Home star spoke with Stephen Colbert about the new Broadway play, winning an Emmy for not talking, and how he'll play a more "mature" James Bond.

Tony winner Nathan Lane (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Producers) joined Stephen Colbert on the TV host's The Late Show January 23 to chat about the wigs of Broadway's Pictures from Home and earning an Emmy for not talking onscreen.

During the interview, Lane talks about the new play, an adaptation of Larry Sultan's photo memoir of the same name, which looks into family dynamics, the relationship between father and son, and the politicization of the family unit. While the topics at the heart of the play have depth, Lane didn't miss a beat in sharing some of the more humorous moments of the production. In discussing the process of getting the wigs right, the actor shares, "Mine was totally white. So when we first got them, I looked like Superman's father Jor-El if he had retired to Miami Beach."

Playing the father Irving in the three-person cast, Lane stars opposite Tony winner Danny Burstein as his son Larry (Moulin Rouge!, Fiddler on the Roof) and Tony nominee Zoë Wanamaker (Awake and Sing!) as the mother, Jean. The strictly limited engagement began previews at Studio 54 January 13, and will open its Broadway run February 9.

The actor also went on to share how he'll take James Bond in a new, "mature" direction as the character faces aging, balancing expensive taste on a fixed income, trying to secure his pension, and more. Be sure to catch Lane and Colbert taking well-timed sips to keep from breaking out in laughter during the dead pan delivery in the video below.

Tony winner Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, To Kill a Mockingbird) directs the play, which features set design by Michael Yeargan, costume design by Jennifer Moeller, lighting design by Jennifer Tipton, sound design by Scott Lehrer and Peter John Still, and projection design by Ben Pearcy at 59 Productions.
