Music Theatre International has released Trevor: The Musical for licensing after adding the show to its library last year. With a book and lyrics by Dan Collins and music by Julianne Wick Davis, the work played an Off-Broadway run in 2021. A film of a stage performance from the Off-Broadway production was released on Disney+ in 2022.

The work is based on the 1995 Academy Award-winning short film Trevor, written by Celeste Lecesne, directed by Peggy Rajski, and produced by Randy Stone and Rajski. Set in 1981, the fictional story follows musical theatre-obsessed middle schooler Trevor Nelson, who has to forge his own path after an embarrassing incident at school suddenly gets him the wrong kind of notoriety. The original film would go on to inspire The Trevor Project, a crisis and suicide prevention hotline for LGBTQIA+ youth founded by Rajski, Stone, and Lecesne in 1998. The musical played a world premiere run at Chicago's Writers Theatre in 2017 before its 2021 Off-Broadway bow.

"We are so thrilled that Trevor is now available through MTI to be enjoyed by audiences and performers alike,” share Collins and Davis in a joint statement. "Our process in creating the show was a labor of love; deeply personal but inspiringly universal in its resonance. We can’t wait for Trevor’s joyful spirit of love and acceptance to be witnessed and shared by more and more people in need of its message."

"Since announcing MTI's representation of Trevor, the interest in this funny and moving show where young performers have the opportunity to play young characters has been incredible," says MTI President and CEO Drew Cohen. "The authors have also tailored the material to make it accessible to a variety of ages and the messages of being true to oneself are more relevant than ever."
