LaChanze Was Judas and Krakowski Was Nala In Miscast Benefit Concert | Playbill

News LaChanze Was Judas and Krakowski Was Nala In Miscast Benefit Concert LaChanze as Judas from Superstar, Norbert Leo Butz and Josh Strickland as Side Show twins, Nicole Parker as the Phantom and Jane Krakowski as Lion King's Nala were among the crazy combinations that were presented during MCC Theatre's annual Miscast benefit concert.

Isaac Mizrahi hosted the March 12 benefit presented at The Hammerstein Ballroom. MCC artistic directors Bernie Telsey and Robert LuPone directed with musical direction by Phil Reno.

Miscast features Broadway performers singing popular Broadway show tunes — but for roles in which they would never be cast. This year's roster of stars included Tony Award winners Norbert Leo Butz (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), Jane Krakowski (Nine, "30 Rock") and LaChanze (The Color Purple) as well as Raúl Esparza (Company), Ana Gasteyer (Wicked), Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights), Josh Strickland (Tarzan), Brooks Ashmanskas (The Producers, Gypsy) and Nicole Parker (Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me, "Mad TV").

The song list performed follows:

  • LaChanze as Judas: "Heaven on their Minds" from Jesus Christ Superstar
  •

  • Brooks Ashmanskas as Ti Moune: "Waiting for Life" from Once on This Island
  •

  • Norbert Leo Butz as Madalaine: "An Old Fashioned Love Story" from The Wild Party
  •

  • Nicole Parker as The Phantom: "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera
  •

  • Raul Esparza as Bea: "Fifty Percent" from Ballroom
  •

  • Brooks Ashmanskas, Butz and Josh Strickland as The Tribe: "Black Boys" from Hair
  •

  • LaChanze, Parker and Jane Krakowski as The Tribe: "White Girls" from Hair
  •

  • Lin-Manuel Miranda as Amy: "Not Getting Married" from Company
  •

  •

  • Krakowski as Nala: "Shadowland" from The Lion King
  •

  • Ashmanskas and Parker as Eponine and Marius: "A Little Fall of Rain" from Les Miserables
  •

  • Jeffrey Seller and Kevin McCollum as Svetlana and Florence: "I Know Him So Well" from Chess
  •

  • Strickland as Capathia: "Stop the Show" from Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me The evening also honored producers Kevin McCollum and Jeffrey Seller (Rent, Avenue Q, In the Heights) "for their commitment to producing new and innovative work and reaching new audiences both on and Off-Broadway." Proceeds from the benefit go towards MCC's programs.

Last year's audience was treated to such mismatched performances as Hairspray star Diana DeGarmo belting "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" from Dreamgirls, Sweeney Todd's Michael Cerveris tackling Nine's "Unusual Way", Felicia P. Fields (The Color Purple) swooning The Sound of Music's "Sixteen Going On Seventeen" and pop singer-turned Broadway diva Deborah Gibson rocking out on Rent's "One Song Glory."
