On April 30, 2019, actor Jeremy Pope became the sixth person in Tony history to be nominated for performance twice in the same year.
Pope was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for his turn at Pharus in Choir Boy and for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for his turn as Temptations’ Eddie Kendricks in Ain’t Too Proud—The Life and Times of the Temptations. What’s more, Choir Boy marked his Broadway debut.
Amanda Plummer was the first to achieve this distinction in 1982, when she was nominated as Best Actress in a Play for A Taste of Honey and Best Featured Actress in a Play for Agnes of God. She won for Agnes of God.
Dana Ivey made history in 1984 as an acting nominee for both a play and a musical. She was nominated as Best Featured Actress in a Play for Heartbreak House and Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Sunday in the Park with George.
Kate Burton was nominated for two plays in 2002: Hedda Gabler (leading role) and The Elephant Man (featured role).
The late Jan Maxwell was nominated twice in 2010, for the plays The Royal Family (leading role) and Lend Me a Tenor (featured role).
Mark Rylance earned two nominations in 2014, for Shakespeare's Richard III (leading role) and Twelfth Night (featured role). He won for Twelfth Night.
Choir Boy earned a total of four nominations, including Best Play by Tarell Alvin McCraney. Ain’t Too Proud earned 12 nominations, including Best Musical.
Pope originated the role of Pharus in the Off-Broadway production of the work in 2013. He also played the role in Atlanta and Los Angeles. He began as Kendricks in Ain’t Too Proud for it 2017 premiere at Berkeley Repertory Company and pre-Broadway engagements in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Toronto.
Choir Boy began performances on Broadway December 12, 2018, with an official opening January 8. Pope then exited the production February 24, just three days before Ain’t Too Proud began performances February 28.
