News How Theatre Helped Stimulate Debate About Gay Marriage In honor of the Supreme Court's historic ruling on gay marriage in America, here is a roundup of how the theatre community has dealt with this issue.

Long before the issue came before the Supreme Court, playwrights and other theatre artists were testing the waters and advancing the idea that marriage equality for all not only wasn't a bad thing, but was something that deserved to be regarded as a fundamental right.

The concluding paragraph of the June 26 majority opinion agrees: "No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. ... [The challengers] ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right."
