Ten-time Grammy winner Janis Siegel is releasing a new album celebrating Broadway composer Cy Coleman June 7 via Club44. Get a first listen to the title track of The Colors of My Life: A Cy Coleman Songbook above.
Siegel is joined by pianist, arranger, and composer Yaron Gershovsky, who produced the album alongside Siegel. Both will celebrate the album's release with a concert at Birdland Theater June 11, joined by Boris Kozlov on bass and Cliff Almond on drums. Tickets are available here.
Siegel is one of the four original members of The Manhattan Transfer, and Gershovsky is the group's longtime pianist and music director. For this latest album, they turned to the work of Coleman, a jazz and theatre composer whose Broadway musicals include Sweet Charity, City of Angels, and Little Me. Gershovsky served as vocal arranger for City of Angels, which notably featured a quartet of tight-harmony singing vocalists, a la Manhattan Transfer.
“Diving into the magnificent and colorful world of Cy Coleman’s music alongside Yaron Gershovsky has been a profoundly enriching experience,” says Siegel in a statement. “We are thrilled to present our unique perspective on his work and can’t wait to share our interpretations with music enthusiasts, both through our recording and live performances.”
"What an inspiring and amazing experience [City of Angels] was," adds Gershovsky. "My love and appreciation of [Coleman's] music led me to The Colors of My Life, where Janis and I highlight Coleman’s genius as we unveil our interpretation of his music through our own personal musical lens. It’s a tribute and a celebration of Coleman and his enormous contribution to the American Songbook.”
