The Kimberly Senior-helmed production of The Niceties will begin October 12 and open October 25 at The Studio at Stage II – Harold and Mimi Steinberg New Play Series at New York City Center, following a debut at Boston's Huntington Theatre Company. The staging will go on to play McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton, New Jersey.
The play explores a conversation between a young black student and her white professor at an East Coast university. What begins as a discussion on the college junior's paper on the American Revolution turns into tense exchanges on race and reputation.
Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan returns to MTC after directing The Little Foxes and Proof to helm Long Lost, beginning May 14, 2019, at New York City Center – Stage 1 before a June 4 opening.
The play follows the reunion between troubled Billy and his estranged brother David, who now has an established, comfortable life with a family and job on Wall Street. As Billy tries to reinsert himself into the picture, family bonds are put to the test as past conflicts resurface.
Casting and creative team for both productions will be announced at a later date.
The two titles join MTC's previously announced Broadway premieres of Richard Bean's The Nap, Tarell Alvin McCraney's Choir Boy, and James Graham's Ink, as well as Off-Broadway stagings of Jaclyn Backhaus' India Pale Ale, Bekah Brunstetter's The Cake, and Bess Wohl's Continuity.
