The Drama League announced Hugh Jackman, Willette Murphy Klausner, Billy Crystal, and Lileana Blain-Cruz as its 2022 Special Recognition Honorees. The 88th Annual Drama League Awards will return in-person with its annual luncheon ceremony May 20 at The Ziegfeld Ballroom.
Honorees are recognized for their unique and outstanding contributions to the theatre industry. A two-time Tony winner, Jackman will receive the Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theater Award; Klausner, the Tony-winning producer behind Hadestown, will be honored with the Gratitude Award; the Contribution to the Theater Award will be presented to Crystal, the Tony-winning comedy favorite, to recognize his work and mentorship within the field; Obie winner and current Lincoln Center Theater Resident Director Blain-Cruz will be honored with the Founders Award for Excellence in Directing.
Drama League Awards nominations for the 2021-2022 Broadway and Off-Broadway season will be announced at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts April 25. Strictly non-virtual productions will need to have been in previews between March 16, 2021 and April 23, 2022 to be eligible.
The Drama League Awards were first presented in 1922 and formalized in 1933.
