Reuben Kaye was a busy bee at this year's Fringe.
The drag cabaret star led two sold out shows at the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe: his long-running Fringe favorite (and Playbill's pick for the top of the Fringe) queer variety show The Kaye Hole, and the return of his empathetically irreverent solo The Butch is Back.
Hosted by Assembly, one of the main venue operators at the Edinburgh Fringe, Playbill followed Kaye as he travelled from the graffiti and glitter covered Assembly Checkpoint to the wooded backstage of Assembly George Square Gardens's Palais du Variete as he prepared to perform a bonus performance of The Butch is Back.

Kaye is taking his autobiographical solo show The Butch is Back on the road following the completion of this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
A native Australian, Kaye's cabaret-comedy performance toes the line between autobiographical standup and full-throated concert. The Butch is Back, which is equal parts introspective and explosive, explores his origins as a young, queer boy in Melbourne as he processes his fraught relationship with his father. 2023 marks the second sold-out year for The Butch is Back at the Fringe.
The Butch is Back will play a near month–long residency at London's Southbank Centre December 7–30. The London engagement is part of a U.K. tour, with stops at Cambridge, Manchester, Brighton, Leeds, Bristol, and Sheffield, among others.
Additionally, Kaye will bring the show to a selection of other European cities, including Antwerp, Oslo, Amsterdam, Stockholm, and Helsinki.
