Actress Charmian Carr has passed away at the age of 73 due to complications from a rare form of dementia.

The actress was best known for her performance as Liesl, the eldest of the Von Trapp children, in the beloved movie musical The Sound of Music.

Carr was 21 at the time she she was “Sixteen going on Seventeen” After The Sound of Music, Carr starred opposite Anthony Perkins in the Stephen Sondheim television musical Evening Primrose.

The daughter of a vaudeville actress and musician, Carr decided to leave the business to raise her two children, Jennifer and Emily. She later began a design business, and Michael Jackson was one of her most famous clients.

She co-wrote two books, one of which was titled Forever Liesl detailing her experience making the iconic film.

Carr is survived by her sisters and brothers: Sharon, Darleen, Michael & Brian, her children Jennifer and Emily, her niece Julie, and her four grandchildren: Emma, Derek, William and Tucker.
