Good Boys, playwright-screenwriter Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s drama about a prep school sex scandal that was seen Off-Broadway in 2008, will premiere in a newly revised production at the Pasadena Playhouse with performances scheduled to begin June 26 for a run through July 21. Carolyn Cantor will direct.
The cast includes Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad, Life in Pieces) and Rock of Ages and Saturday Night Fever star James Carpinello, as well as Ben Ahlers (The Village), Toks Olagundoye (Veep), Dylan Arnold (Halloween), and Annamarie Kasper (Criminal Minds).
Known for his work on Riverdale, Glee, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and script doctor to Broadway’s Spider-Man, Aguirre-Sacasa has revised the play since its 2008 Off-Broadway premiere at Second Stage Theatre, where it was produced under the title Good Boys and True.
“The dramatic situations in this play are uncannily similar to incidents and issues that we’re still grappling with in this country—viscerally—even more so than when I first wrote Good Boys,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “In revisiting the play, I further explored themes like privilege, masculinity, and personal responsibility, as Brandon and Elizabeth find themselves on trial by their community and each other. Good Boys is a sort of ‘moral thriller,’ a game of cat and mouse between a mother and her son, with twists and turns that will keep you guessing about the truth right up to the end.”
