Burlesque the Musical, the stage adaptation of Steven Antin’s film of the same name, will make its West End premiere this summer.
The new musical, which made its world premiere in June 2024 at the Manchester Opera House, will begin previews at London's Savoy Theatre July 10 prior to an official opening July 22. The limited engagement will continue through September 6.
Casting and additional creative team members will be announced at a later date. Nick Winston directed and choreographed the Manchester production, which subsequently made its Scottish premiere at the Glasgow Theatre Royal. The Manchester company was led by Jess Folley (The Voice and The X Factor: The Band) as Ali Rose, Jackie Burns (Wicked, Hair) as Tess, and Todrick Hall as Sean.
The new musical, written and produced by Antin, with additional material by Kate Wetherhead, features songs by Christina Aguilera and Sia, with new music by Hall and Folley.
Aguilera, who starred in the Golden Globe-nominated film and is the executive producer of the musical, said in a statement, “I’m proud that Burlesque the Musical is coming to London’s West End! Our journey of making this film to bringing this show to the stage has been so special and exciting. Following our successful previews, having the show land in the West End later this year is a dream come true!”
Academy Award winner Cher co-starred in the Burlesque film, which followed Ali (Aguilera), who escaped hardship in a small town to follow her dreams to L.A. After stumbling upon The Burlesque Lounge, she lands a job as a cocktail waitress from Tess (Cher), the club's proprietor and headliner. Ali then becomes a star performer at the club.
The soundtrack included "Something's Got a Hold on Me," "Welcome to
Burlesque," "Tough Lover," "But I Am a Good Girl," "Guy What Takes His
Time," "Express," "You Haven't Seen the Last Of Me," "Bound to You,"
"Show Me How You Burlesque," and "The Beautiful People."
Burlesque The Musical is produced by Adam Paulden and Jason Haigh-Ellery and Sue Gilad and Larry Rogowsky, Antin and Aguilera, and Clint Culpepper.
Tickets will go on sale March 26 at BurlesqueOnStage.com.
