Broadway grosses are in from last week, and The Phantom of the Opera is once again topping the list. The long-running Andrew Lloyd Webber musical pulled in a staggering $3 million last week, the highest weekly gross in the British show's entire, historic 35-year run. That achievement is made further notable because the production gave just eight performances last week. The production's previous box office record came from a nine-performance holiday week. It's also the first time the production has ever broken the $3 million mark, part of the show's victory lap as it prepares for its final chandelier crash April 16.
Attendance on Broadway also remains extremely healthy. Last week, 259,832 people saw a Broadway show, with 11 out of 29 productions playing to more-than-100% capacity. In fact, only seven productions played to less-than-90% capacity. With an average ticket price coming in at $131.33 across all 29 shows, Broadway took in a cumulative $34 million last week, a sharp increase from $28.6 million the week prior with only two additional productions.
Excluding long-running hits, Broadway's newest winners are looking to be Sweeney Todd, which brought in $1.63 million last week even as its leading man Josh Groban was sidelined from at least three performances; & Juliet, a sell-out at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, bringing in $1.27 million; and Parade, also a sell out and bringing in just over $1 million. Some Like It Hot had a particularly good week, bringing in $971,410 last week with 88% of seats filled at the Shubert. That box office is the production's second-highest since its nine-performance Christmas-New Year's week.
