Ariana DeBose will lead the upcoming psychological thriller House of Spoils, as reported by Variety. The movie comes from a collaboration between Blumhouse and Prime Video, who previously released an anthology of horror movies called Welcome to the Blumhouse.
The stage and screen actor will step into the role of a chef who, upon opening her first restaurant, realizes that it has been cursed by the evil spirit of the previous owner. Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy serve as screenplay writers and directors.
"Since Blow the Man Down, we have been huge fans of Bridget and Danielle’s unique filmmaking voice and knew we needed to be a part of whatever they wanted to do next," says Amazon Studio's Head of Movies Julie Rapaport. "Pairing their thrilling script with Ariana’s incredible talent is a dream come true, and we could not be more excited to bring this story to the screen and to our customers around the world."
"We’re excited to see Ariana’s fresh, bold and spirited energy that won her an Oscar in a role that is completely different," adds Blumhouse Television President Chris McCumber. "And with the gifted filmmaking team of Bridget and Danielle, the talent in front of and behind the camera is exceptional."
DeBose shared her excitement for her upcoming role on Twitter. She wrote, "New adventures! So excited to dive in with Danielle, Bridget, @PrimeVideo, @blumhouse & our incredible producing team."
During the previous awards season, DeBose received Academy, BAFTA, Critics Choice, and SAG Awards for her performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg's film adaptation of West Side Story. She was invited to join the Academy in 2022, and followed her year of successes by hosting the 2022 Tony Awards.
The Broadway veteran's stage credits include Bring It On: The Musical, Motown The Musical, Pippin, Hamilton, A Bronx Tale The Musical, and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. DeBose was Tony-nominated for her performance in Summer and won a Chita Rivera Award for Outstanding Female Dancer in a Broadway show.
Most recently, DeBose received a 2022 Imagen Awards nomination for Best Actress (Feature Film) alongside her costars Rachel Zegler and Rita Moreno.
She also starred in the Netflix movie adaptation of Broadway's The Prom and Apple TV+'s Golden Age musical theatre satire Schmigadoon! and is expected to return for the recently announced second season. She is also set to star in Sony Pictures' Kraven the Hunter, Apple's Argylle, and the space thriller ISS.
House of Spoils will be produced by Blum, Alex Scharfman, Lucas Joaquin, Drew Houpt, Adam Hendrick, and Greg Gilreath. Executive producers are Chris McCumber and Jeremy Gold.
