In a recent interview with Queerty, Lambert said, "They offered. I'm flattered they asked me, but it's not what I want to do right now. It's an amazing role. Maybe one day. The thing about it is I don't want to get in drag for eight shows a week."
Hedwig would have marked the Broadway debut of Lambert. Although he is no stranger to the world of musical theatre, he has only been on tour with Wicked and has yet to play Broadway.
The musical currently stars "Glee" actor Darren Criss through July 19. Taye Diggs will be the next star to put on Hedwig's high heels.
The Broadway premiere of the cult rock musical began previews March 29, 2014, at the Belasco, prior to an official opening April 22 with Neil Patrick Harris in the title role. Tony nominee Andrew Rannells succeeded Harris, and Michael C. Hall ("Dexter," Cabaret) succeeded Rannells.
Prior to Criss' Broadway return, Hedwig featured the show's co-creator and original Off-Broadway star John Cameron Mitchell.
Hedwig features a book by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask.
