Every day this December, Playbill will be getting into the spirit of the season with 31 Days of Holiday Cheer—sharing some of our favorite music videos from Broadway stars. Check in daily for classic tunes and new songs about Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year's. And we even have some surprise new, original Playbill videos to share.
Listen. We know we said "cheer," but sometimes the holidays are rough. Especially if you are missing someone. So now that presents have been unwrapped, leftovers are spilling out of the fridge, and loved ones have started to leave, we're going to take this day after Christmas to just be a little sad.
And we're going to listen to a sad song. But beautifully sung...which sort of cheers us up a little. Check out the official video for "Winter Song" above, co-written by Waitress composer Sara Bareilles and The Notebook composer Ingrid Michaelson. Long before either made their Broadway debuts, the song appeared on the 2008 compilation album The Hotel Café Presents Winter Songs, featuring female indie musicians singing holiday songs.
And "Winter Song" has also become a popular holiday tune for Broadway stars. We love the Leslie Odom, Jr. and Cynthia Erivo cover of "Winter Song" that Odom included on his 2020 record, The Christmas Album. Listen to it below.
And come back tomorrow. As the New Year approaches, we promise to be a little more...cheery.
