Happy Halloween from Playbill! As we enter Halloweekend, we at Playbill have been revisiting a bevy of horror movies that have starred some of our favorite theatrical talent over the years.

Ranging from positively spine tingling to hilariously horrifying, Broadway talent has popped up on screen for decades in the melodramatic annals of Halloween entertainment, serving up scares instead of songs.

So grab a cup of hot tea, curl up under your favorite blanket, and turn on your favorite streamer to watch our selection of spooktaculer films, with plenty of stage stars along the way!

The Exorcist: Believer (2023)

Out this year, the newest addition to The Exorcist franchise is stuffed to the gills with Broadway talent, including Tony winners Norbert Leo Butz and Leslie Odom, Jr. as the fathers of who girls who find themselves possessed. They are joined by Tony winner Ellen Burstyn, reprising her performance as Chris MacNeil from the original film, and Waitress's Jennifer Nettles, who plays Butz's wife. The film is still in movie theatres, as well as streaming on Amazon Prime.

The Company of Wolves (1984)

Is Gothic Fantasy more your speed? Rewind 40 years, and you'll find Neil Jordan's fantastical horror film reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood, starring Broadway legend Angela Lansbury. Adapted from Angela Carter's short fiction story of the same name, The Company of Wolves cast Lansbury as the superstitious grandmother who attempts to protect her orphaned granddaughter with a foreboding prophecy: "Never stray from the path, never eat a windfall apple, and never trust a man whose eyebrows meet." The film is currently free to stream on YouTube, or on AMC+.

Stake Land (2011)

Do you prefer your halloween films with a bit more grit? Look no further than Stake Land, a post-apocalyptic vampire horror flick following a vampire hunters journey to safety while attempting to protect an orphaned young boy. Along the way, they run afoul of The Brotherhood, a religious cult lead by Jebedia Loven (Michael Cerveris) that believes the vampire plague is God's will. The independent film is currently free to stream on Amazon Prime, Tubi, and Peacock.

Scary Movie (2000)

Maybe you just want a good belly laugh this Halloween: no shame it in! You can't go wrong with 2000's Scary Movie, an irreverent slasher parody film that kickstarted a craze for horror comedy in the early 2000s, launching a film series that spawned four sequels. Tony winner Marissa Jaret Winokur plays Tina, a friend of protagonist Cindy's who meets her untimely end in a theatrical fashion. The film is currently streaming on Max.

Gravy (2015)

This next option isn't for those of you with weak stomachs: the comedy horror film features cannibalism as a major plot point. Tony winner Sutton Foster plays Kerry, an employee of a local Mexican Cantina & Bar whose going away party is commandeered by a group of sadistic cannibals who pick the partygoers off one by one. Surreal, surprising, and Sweeney Todd-esque in its treatment of cannibalism, the film is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

Carrie (1976)

You can't go wrong with a classic! The film adaptation Stephen King's Carrie is beloved for many reasons, including the performance of Broadway legend Betty Buckley as Miss Collins, one of Carrie's teachers who shows kindness to her. Buckley's casting would prove to be prophetic, as she would later play Carrie's cruel mother Margaret in the stage adaptation of King's story. Carrie is currently streaming on Max.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

Sci-fi comedy horror film The Cabin of the Woods revitalized the slasher genre in the 2010s, critiquing the horror trend of torture porn by favoring tension and intrigue to depict a group of college students attempting to survive their stay in a house of horrors. The film features a number of theatrical faces, including Bradley Whitford, Jesse Williams, Fran Kranz, Richard Jenkins, and Sigourney Weaver. The film is currently streaming on Max and Apple TV+.

Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)

The sixth film in the Alien series (and fourth in the Predator series) was a highly anticipated matchup, pitting the two extraterrestial forces against each other as humanity is caught in the crosshairs. The film starred Broadway's Stephen Pasquale as Dallas, a recently released convict who finds himself trapped in the middle of a battle that could end humanity as we know it. Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem is currently streaming on STARZ and Amazon Prime.

Deliver Us From Evil (2014)

Maybe you like your Halloween flicks with a dose of religious trauma? Try out this supernatural horror film, which sees a range of New Yorkers suddenly afflicted with a fearsome case of demon possession that appears to jump from person to person as they commit unthinkable acts of violence against their loved ones. The film featured Aidan Gemme (Finding Neverland) as Mario, one of the afflicted. Deliver Us From Evil is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

Day of the Dead (2008)

This remake of Day of the Dead, the remarkably influential post apocalyptic zombie film from 1985, starred two time Tony nominee Stark Sands as Private Bud Crain. Bud is a young solider who fights with every bit of will in his body to protect the innocent during the sudden descent of a zombie plague. The film is currently free to stream on Youtube.
