Jake Gyllenhaal stopped by The Tonight Show March 20 to chat with Jimmy Fallon about his current star turn in Sunday in the Park with George. The revival at the Hudson Theatre marks his Broadway musical debut, and it’s no easy feat, thanks to Stephen Sondheim’s intricate melodies and lyrics.
“I think of Sondheim as a playwright with music,” Gyllenhaal says. “He’s a genius, and a lot of it is expressive in the way that if you could actually act into song, that’s what it would sound like.” He then broke into George’s fast-paced patter section in the number “Color and Light,” leaving Fallon, the audience, and Questlove impressed. Take a look above.
While on the show, Gyllenhaal also channeled his inner Georges Seurat by sketching Questlove—or, at least, passing off a previously drawn portrait as his own.
The Sarna Lapine-helmed revival of Sunday in the Park with George, which also stars Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford, is scheduled to run through April 23.
