Jason Robert Brown doesn’t parse words in his “Song About Your Gun,” the final track featured in his “Inside the Album” video series about the writing of his latest record How We React and How We Recover.

The song is a direct appeal for gun control in America. “Sandy Hook broke me,” says Jason Robert Brown of the 2012 massacre of young children at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. “Finally I had the courage to say it,” he explains of his decision to use music as a protest and rally cry.

“It has since become a very important thing in my life to feel like I can try and help solve a problem,” says Brown. While the song and its performance serves as a consistent reminder of the issue, Brown has also raised money for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

The 2016 presentation of Brown’s The Last Five Years at Town Hall starring Joshua Henry and Cynthia Erivo served as a fundraiser for the Brady Campain and included a pre-show performance of “Song About Your Gun.” Brown continues to collect funds for the Brady Campaign after each one of his residency concerts at New York City’s SubCulture.

“Song About Your Gun” remains one of the tentpoles of the intention behind How We React and How We Recover, released June 29 by Ghostlight Records.
