With a Bob Fosse-Gwen Verdon limited series from Lin-Manuel Miranda on the horizon, New York City's Quad Cinema will present Performance Anxieties: Fosse at the Movies August 3–9. All That Jazz, Cabaret, Damn Yankees, Lenny, The Little Prince, Liza with a Z, My Sister Eileen, Star 80, and Sweet Charity will all be screened as part of the series.
The collection of films showcase the full spectrum of Fosse's work on the screen as a performer, director, and choreographer. Fosse's Broadway choreography was adapted for the screen in Damn Yankees (starring Tab Hunter and frequent Fosse collaborator Gwen Verdon) and Sweet Charity, the latter representing Fosse's big screen directorial debut as well.
Cabaret, for which Fosse won an Academy Award for Best Director, features original choreography devised by Fosse expressly for the screen, along with All That Jazz, My Sister Eileen, and The Little Prince.
My Sister Eileen and The Little Prince both feature Fosse as a performer, while he wrote All That Jazz and Star 80. Liza with a Z features Fosse both as a stage director-choreographer and film director, capturing Liza Minnelli's 1972 concert from the stage of Broadway's Lyceum Theatre for an Emmy-winning television broadcast.
The August 7 screening of Liza with a Z will be introduced by Melissa Anderson, film editor for 4Columns.
