Bernadette Peters took over the role of meddling matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi in the current revival of Hello, Dolly! last month, and last night, The Late Show’s Stephen Colbert welcomed the three-time Tony recipient to his stage to talk about her return to Broadway.

Colbert shares an experience with Peters, having both sung Stephen Sondheim’s work in front of Sondheim—Peters in six of his shows and Colbert in the concert version of Company. Colbert asked if Peters ever tries to stray from the music written on the page.

While Peters says Sondheim was always open to listening to her thoughts, he’d go back to what he wrote because “he actually thought of all that before you thought of it. He made the best choice.” This is why Peters “had the most fun, because he's so strict, when Wynton Marsalis interpreted his music for [City Center's A Bed and a Chair], and [Sondheim] said to me, ’Just do whatever you want.’”

Peters also discussed why she changed her name at the age of five and the upcoming season of Mozart in the Jungle.

Peters also spoke about how much she is currently enjoying her time as Dolly. “I’m having a fabulous time,” she says in the video above. “It’s a beautiful show, and it’s uplifting and light in this world where we have to get back into the light.”
