One of the least accessible of Tennessee Williams plays, Camino Real is a dark adventure set somewhere between earth and hell while intermingling characters both real and fictional: the romantic poet Lord Byron; the infamous Italian lover Casanova; Cervantes' knight-errant Don Quixote de la Mancha; the aforementioned Camille, the consumptive courtesan from Alexandre Dumas' La Dame aux Camelias; and several others.
