The anxiety and unease evident throughout the nation are reflected in many of autumn’s upcoming Off-Broadway attractions.

In anticipation of the 40th anniversary of the opening of A Chorus Line Off-Broadway at the Public Theater April 16, Playbill.com reached out to the cast of the original Broadway production, who shared their memories from rehearsals to performance, including a special tribute to composer Marvin Hamlisch, who died Aug. 6, 2012.

Bernadette Peters loves Rodgers and Hammerstein. Actually, “Bernadette Peters Loves Rodgers & Hammerstein” is the title of Peters’ eagerly awaited new recording, which will be released on March 12 on the Angel Records label. Produced by Peters’ close friend and director, Richard Jay-Alexander, the 13-track disc boasts arrangements by Jonathan Tunick. Tunick is also the disc’s co-producer and conductor, and he recently commented, “I have always wanted to do a project with Bernadette, and am delighted to have worked with her on this extraordinary recording. Her vocal and acting abilities are the perfect complement to the brilliant work of these two legendary songwriters.” Jay-Alexander, who directed Peters’ now-historic solo Carnegie Hall debut, adds, “Bernadette Peters and Rodgers and Hammerstein together make perfect sense. She is a singer’s singer and an actor’s actor. The way she analyzes a song -- its melody, its lyrics, is an experience one would find difficult to describe. I swear that when she sings, I can actually hear her heart flutter, fly, race or break. I describe it as ‘honest’ and ‘bliss.’” And, what does the Tony-winning actress have to say about the genius of R&H? “We’ve taken these songs for granted all our lives,” Peters explains, “but if you examine them closely, there’s much to discover.”

The long-awaited revival of Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun opened last night at the Marquis Theatre, starring the one-and-only Bernadette Peters as Annie Oakley, a role made famous by the legendary Ethel Merman. The star-studded audience included such notables as Danny Aiello, Brooke Astor, Lauren Bacall, Catherine Bach, Sandy Duncan, Ben Gazzara, Barbara Cook, Joel Grey, Merv Griffin, Mary Cleere Haran, Marilu Henner, James Earl Jones, Sharon Lawrence, Cameron Mackintosh, John McDaniel, Mary Tyler Moore, Rosie O'Donnell, Gregory Peck, Brooke Shields, Bobby Short, Ann Reinking, William Finn and many others. Little Me, the Cy Coleman musical starring Martin Short and Faith Prince, will end its run at the Roundabout Theatre Company Feb. 7. Before the cast leaves town, however, they will congregate on Monday, Feb. 1, to record the show for Varese Sarabande. The album will be released on Mar. 9, said spokesperson Kevin Rehac (of Keith Sherman & Associates). Bruce Kimmel will produce the recording.
