Regina Resnik, an opera star who sang more than 300 performances at the Metropolitan Opera and who received a Tony Award nomination for Cabaret in 1987, died on Aug. 8 2013 in Manhattan. She was 90.
In 1987, following decades of opera performances around the world, Ms. Resnik made he Broadway debut, playing Frau Schneider in a revival of Cabaret. The portrayal netted her a Tony nomination. She won a Drama Desk Award nomination three years late when she played Mme. Armfeldt in a Lincoln Center staging of Sondheim's A Little Night Music.
Born in The Bronx to Russian immigrants and educated at Hunter College, she made her Met debut in 1944 as Leonora in Il Trovatore. She also performed at New York City Opera, the San Francisco Opera and Covent Garden.
Her best-known roles, according to the New York Times, included Ellen Orford in Britten’s Peter Grimes, Donna Anna and Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni and the title role in Bizet’s Carmen.
As she grew older and her voice lowered, she made a switch from soprano to mezzo-soprano parts.
