BREAKDOWN

VLADIMIR

SEEKING:
RAYA – 40s-50s. An independent journalist. She's intelligent, tough, principled. Hard headed and unapologetic. Holds everyone around her to an almost impossibly high standard, but does so to herself as well. Willing to put herself in danger in pursuit of truth. Clear-eyed about the world. Exhausted by the fight against tyranny, but unwilling – possibly unable – to give it up.

SEMA – 40s-50s. A news editor. Raya’s boss and close friend. A smart guy; charismatic, a bit louche. Good fun. A journalist in his own right, he has spent his career speaking truth to power and promoting other voices that do the same. But, as speaking out becomes less safe, he struggles to maintain the courage of his convictions.

YEVGENY – 30s. A financial analyst. Eventually, reluctantly, Raya’s source. An ordinary man, expecting his first child. Naturally quiet and wry, his discovery of massive financial fraud scuttles his plans to keep his head down and live a small life. He finds himself in an agonizing battle between his conscience and his well-justified fear of speaking out. Any race/ethnicity.

GALINA – 20s. Raya’s daughter. About to be married. A teacher. Smart, no bullshit. A pragmatist. Her fear of losing her mother manifests as impatience with Raya’s stubborn heroism. She admires her, but the pain of sharing her with a cause is a never-ending ache between them. Doubles as MARIYA/MASHA/BARTENDER. Any ethnicity.

ANDREI – 40s-50s. A Kremlin official. Sema’s old friend. An insider; always the alpha. He plays the game and does it well. Sharp and cynical. Doesn’t see the point in being one of history’s victims. Doubles as OLD MAN (Boris Yeltsin) /DEACON.

JIM – 40s/50s. An American investor living in Moscow. Ambitious and slick, with a chip on his shoulder for all the finance bros who come from privilege. Wants to make his money and get back to America. Tries to hide his striving behind bravado, but his intensity gives him away. Doubles as DIRECTOR/VITALY (the third friend in SEMA & ANDREI’s trio, and definitely the beta member)/NEWS PERSONALITY.

CHOVKA – Early-mid 20s. A young woman from Chechnya. Mordant humor carries trauma. Her rage burns cold, not hot. A fighter. Challenges Raya to see her clearly. Speaks in a way that is poetic and disorienting, but not lyrical – bending ordinary language to try to make it express the horror she has experienced. Ideally someone who seems both physically strong and quite young. Doubles as TATIANA/CREW MEMBER/CLERK.
