DESCRIPTION

This is a one day only (1/20/25 - 10AM to 6PM), closed reading of a new play based on the literary classic by Washington Irving. It will take place in Midtown West. The purpose of the reading is for the playwright to hear the play and further develop the script. Casting is by submission, based on headshot and resume. Casting decisions will be made by 12/20/24. Please submit to [email protected]

This is an unpaid event. Lunch will be provided.

Genre: Horror/Thriller/Monster-in-the-House

The following roles have been cast: ICHABOD CRANE; THE TENANT; BALTUS VAN TASSEL; CATE HENDRIKS; LARS HENDRIKS/JUSTICE; DIEDRICH KNICKERBOCKER.

ROLES AVAILABLE:
KATRINA VAN TASSEL
(18-25) — Daughter of a wealthy land baron; searching for her voice, and the truth. She is beautiful, headstrong, well-read, and book-smart. Suffering deep abandonment trauma, she works to find answers in a world which crushes anyone who threatens the status quo, especially women. But Katrina is steadfast, and undergoes a painful metamorphosis. Principal.
BROM BONES
(25-30) — A blacksmith and man of “Herculean” frame wrestling with the cost of ambition. Brom is a “burly, roaring, boisterous blade”; he starts fights and finishes them. He’s a natural leader, though the extent of his leadership hasn’t stretched beyond a pack of knaves Irving called “the Sleepy Hollow boys”. Brom vacillates between perpetual immaturity and the call to be something bigger than himself. Of him Irving wrote, “he had more mischief than ill-will in his composition”, and that “his amorous toyings were something like the gentle caresses and endearments of a bear”. Brom has a soft underbelly, if you can get past the claws and teeth. Principal.
ELIZABETH JANSSEN
(30-40) — A widow and mother surviving in a dangerous place. She cares for her children above all else. She knows, given the death of her husband, she must cling to the charities of others in order to ensure her survival and that of her children. Elizabeth is resourceful, but not without conscience. Supporting.
PARSON THOMAS MARTLING
(40-60) — A fumbling clergyman doing his best with the impossible. Representative of the traditional religious element of Sleepy Hollow, he acts as a grounding rod for both religious and secular matters. Highly intelligent; the parson and the schoolmaster were typically the two smartest people in any town. Parson Martling feels personally responsible for the souls of the townsfolk and will not suffer any threats to his duty. Supporting.
EMMA DAWSON/SARAH VAN TASSEL
(40-50) — Irish maid to the van Tassel household. She survived emigration from Ireland and then the American Revolution. Dawson takes the security of the household very seriously and knows her way around a long rifle as well as the kitchen./Sarah is Katrina’s mother and Baltus’ wife. A woman of privilege with deep ties to Sleepy Hollow. She trusts her husband absolutely, and harbors no greater love than her daughter. Supporting.
FREDERICK LEE/MAN 1
(20-30) — Of the myriad peculiar inhabitants of Sleepy Hollow, Irving refers to the Sleepy Hollow Boys as “rustic”. Frederick is one of Brom’s “boon companions”; one of the Sleepy Hollow boys. Pack animals know if they stick with a winner, they’ll eat too. Frederick isn’t a fool./An aggressor. Supporting.
SAMUEL SMITH/MAN 2
(20-30) — Another of Brom’s “boon companions”, the Sleepy Hollow Boys. He’s a simple man. Samuel endeavors to be included; akin to the smallest dog in the pack./An aggressor. Supporting.
