The Properties Designer is responsible for assessing and designing all physical hand props used by performers in a production. Using the Director’s concept as a guide, the Properties Designer analyzes the script and creates a properties list consisting of all items mentioned and implied in the script by the author. Throughout rehearsals the Director may request additional props to help develop the story. At times, this communication may be made through the Stage Manager through production reports. The Properties Designer attends creative development sessions with other production team members to determine the world of the show. Final show designs will be approved by the Director and Producers. The designer will then meet with the Head of Properties to develop a plan to execute the design.
The Properties Designer is required to attend all production and development meetings, as well as attend previews and all technical rehearsals to ensure the items in their design are correct and properly working. Any adjustments or notes must be communicated with the props department.
