ESPERANZA RISING: THE MUSICAL

SYNOPSIS
In colorful 1930s Mexico, 13-year-old Esperanza Ortega has it all: a perfect family, a home in a beautiful hacienda, and a bright future ahead of her. That is, until a tragedy forces Esperanza and her mother to flee their fairytale for a migrant labor camp in California. When Mama gets sick and a strike threatens their livelihoods, Esperanza must grow from a princesa to a patrona to save her family. From Caballero & Cordray, Esperanza Rising is a musical adaptation of the beloved, award-winning novel by Pam Muñoz Ryan. Told through a rich blend of Mexican musical genres—from Huapango to Norteña, Son Jarocho, Danzón, and more—Esperanza Rising is a celebration of Mexican culture that spotlights the hidden Mexican-American history of labor camps and farmworkers who get our food on the table.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
ESPERANZA: (She/Her), Only considering 18+ to play 13. Raised like a princess, adored by all. She's the jewel at the center of El Rancho de las Rosas and she knows it. An ingenue who grows into her strength. Soprano with a strong mix.

SIXTO: (He/Him), 30s-40s. Esperanza’s father and the benevolent owner of El Rancho de las Rosas. Gentle and kind, he has an eternal twinkle in his eye and a penchant for mischief. Tenor.

RAMONA: (She/Her), 30s-40s. Esperanza’s mother and the patrona of El Rancho de las Rosas. Proper yet warm, she owns any room she walks into with glamour and ease. Who Esperanza dreams of becoming. Soprano.

HORTENSIA: (She/Her), 30s-40s. The housekeeper of el Rancho de las Rosas and Ramona’s closest confidante. Bustling and maternal, she has always tended to the Ortega’s every need (though they see her as part of the family). Mezzo-Soprano/Alto.

ALFONSO: (He/Him), 30s-40s. Hortensia’s husband and Sixto’s right-hand man, the Head of the Fields. Sappy and big-hearted, he’s a family man who feels a strong sense of duty to the Ortegas. Baritone.

TÍO LUÍS: (He/Him), 30s-40s. Sixto’s brother. The owner of the bank in Aguascalientes, he’s a corrupt man who thinks only of power and influence. The relative everyone hopes won’t show up to the gathering. Baritone.
