NOTE to participants: this play, in a highly abstracted way, does depict SA, perpetrated by Soren/C to L.

Playwright’s Note: “We're in a moment in time culturally where femme bodies and experiences are constantly being co-opted by the male gaze and by patriarchal power. This piece examines the way by which something as intimate as the grieving process, and its somatic elements, comes to be objectified, and offers a message of empowerment through L's journey from the frozen into the flame.”

Storyline:

"Come Flower, Come Flame" is a radical and moving tale of reclaiming the femme body through grief. J, the elder self, moves back through time to find her younger self, L, frozen in grief over the recent death of her father. While in mourning, L’s grief is sexualized and objectified by men, echoing an inner conflict: “Am I meant to be frozen?” As J dances with the memory of a time since the past, she encourages L's journey from the frozen towards the flame: from loss into love, and from what grieving ‘ought to look like’ into an ownership which transforms the body and the soul.

Seeking:

[J] - Mid 30’s-Early 40’s. Femme Presenting. The older. She is L, when L has learned, knows, and understands- at least, more than she did before. She owns her body. She walks and carries herself with a confidence and a peace that comes from radical release. She is fierce, and determined, but maternal towards her younger self. Ferocity of spirit meets gentleness of soul. Strong movers encouraged. WILL BE INVOLVED IN INTIMACY. AN INTIMACY DIRECTOR WILL BE PRESENT.

[B / “FATHER”] - Mid 40’s-Mid 50’s. Masc Presenting. L, and subsequently J’s, now deceased Father- his presence feels the way warm candlelight does, on a cold evening near the holidays. There is a soft-spoken, understated wisdom and radiant, effervescent love. He is almost larger than life- he is distorted through memory to be half man, half God. All warmth. All light.

[C] - Mid-Late 20’s. Masc Presenting. As written, “the prick.” C, also called the name Soren, is the incarnation of Patriarchy, in its ugliness. An unabashed, unforgiving lust for that which he cannot take: when he cannot tame a woman’s soul to his hand, he forces her body to bend. He seeks to make pretty the grief that rages under L’s self-suppression. He craves normalcy, wherein he can exert authority and feel comfort. He is threatened by L’s shifting and growing. He and L were “in love”, once- in the way you ‘love’ before you know what love really means. Was it love? Probably not. WILL BE INVOLVED IN INTIMACY AND WILL PERPETRATE A HIGHLY STYLIZED SEXUAL ASSAULT AGAINST "L". AN INTIMACY DIRECTOR WILL BE PRESENT.

[K], Early-Mid 20’s. Open/not specified as Masc or Femme. The pureness of a genuine young love, walking in shoes that are two sizes too big. The romance of the one who’s been there the whole time, and who loves without conditions: but also, one who loves without full breadth and understanding of the responsibility that is a grown-up, worn in love. There’s a sunflower quality to K, which folds into an understanding through their arc in the story. Sometimes, the greatest act of love is to say “we aren’t ready to love each other yet. We have our own journeys to walk first.” Like L, a precarious balance of “wise beyond their years” and “charmingly naive and movingly optimistic.” WILL BE INVOLVED IN A PROLONGED KISS WITH "L". AN INTIMACY DIRECTOR WILL BE PRESENT.

Already Cast:

[L] - CAST - Early-Mid 20’s, Femme Presenting. The younger. She is learning what J knows and understands. She is afraid of her feelings being too loud, too big, and too messy. Caught in the sliver of light between naive and precautious, she is battling to suppress her own grief and her own body. She seeks love, and yearns for a release, a breaking through and breaking free, but is convinced she is frozen. Strong mover.
