BREAKDOWN

BECOMING EVE

SYNOPSIS: BECOMING EVE is the true story of Rabbi Abby Chava Stein, the child of a prominent Hasidic family whose identity as a trans woman comes into opposition with the strictly gendered world in which she was raised. The play centers on a conversation between Abby, her devout father and a young liberal rabbi, as they reckon with questions of gender and faith.

SEEKING:

CHAVA. Character portrayed is a Jewish trans female in her 20s. Magnetic, fiercely intelligent, a quick thinker, witty and sarcastic, feminine, strong-willed.

JONAH. Character portrayed is a Jewish cis male in his 30s. A young rabbi. Neurotic, serious, exuberant, a little cocky.

CHESKY. Character portrayed is Jewish, non-binary or a trans male, in their 20s. Chava’s friend. They present as an Orthodox Jewish male because of the circumstances they were born into, but are exploring and expanding their identity throughout the play. Passionate, emotional, inquisitive, playful.

MAMI. Character portrayed is a Jewish cis female in her 50s. Chava’s mother. Warm but withholding, compassionate but distant, can hold her own when needed.

TATI. [THIS ROLE IS ON OFFER] Character portrayed is a Jewish cis male in his 50s. Chava’s father. Powerful, high status, fiercely intelligent, witty, traditionally masculine, a deep tenderness and love for his family always vibrating underneath.

FRAIDY. [THIS ROLE IS ON OFFER] Character portrayed is a Jewish cis female in her 20s. Chava’s wife. Thoughtful, warm, stubborn, impulsive.
