This is an acting class for actors run by actors, focusing on how technique meets individual artistry for folks who want to tap back into making art and not just auditioning for it! What is our responsibility as actors? How do we take ownership for telling the story the playwright wrote? How can you craft a performance that excites you, serves the play, and is a gift to the audience?
We will focus on breaking down text, making big (thoughtful!) choices while understanding the genre/mood/tone of the plays we’re working on. Our goal is to take the mysticism and reliance on “feeling it” out of the acting process, but rather to help you learn practical tools to set yourself up for success by crafting a sustainable performance.
Your power comes from your ability to make choices you can stand behind to build the performance you want; the confidence to stand behind your choices comes from understanding the story you are telling. To that end, we will work with dense, complex language-based plays that will challenge you to not skip over anything and take every opportunity to act. This scene study class is a compassionate and fearless laboratory for exploration, risk, and failure.
It’s not magic. It’s about holding yourself accountable for using your artistry to make choices where the requirements of the play and your imagination meet.
The class is led by actors and teachers Katie Croyle and Evan Horwitz. We are working actors and teachers MFAs from Brown/Trinity and teach in the style of our training there. We will curate the class around the students who sign up. Class is limited to 12 students.
Pricing will be $575 for the whole 6 week course. Payment installment plans & discounts are available - we want this to be as accessible as possible while covering all the overhead costs of running it.
TESTIMONIALS
"I am so glad I took Katie and Evan’s “It’s Not Magic” advanced acting class! How refreshing to approach the craft with an emphasis on sustainability and on serving the storytelling (rather than on one’s own “feelings” being the primary focus while acting). Focusing on building a strong foundation for my own assigned character/scene brick by brick each week while simultaneously observing and learning from other working professionals was immensely helpful. What’s more, Katie and Evan do an amazing job of encouraging actors to trust themselves while simultaneously pointing out the specific, individual ways in which they can continue to grow."
"Katie and Evan's class pointed out concrete, actionable ways in which I can continue to grow as an actor, and illuminated things that no one has ever illuminated for me before regarding habits that aren’t serving me. AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE!"
"I would recommend this class wholeheartedly. I learned so much and gained new confidence in trusting the space and making it my own. Super material and Katie and Evan have such keen eyes and an articulate way of voicing and communicating from the inside. Such a great sense of community and camaraderie"
"This class was awesome! Katie and Evan created an open and safe creative space from the jump with a group of strangers (something I have found lacking in other acting/scene study classes I've taken). They emphasized us being individuals and we were able to make different goals for our time in the course. They helped us form a plan and consistently checked in with us about that plan. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to improve something specific within their own work. Great way to meet other artists and get better at finding the trust with a "stranger" needed to produce good work!"
