Justin Peck, who won a Tony Award earlier this year for his work as choreographer on the Broadway revival of Carousel, has joined the creative team of the upcoming remake of West Side Story.
As previously announced, Steven Spielberg is set to direct the new film adaptation of Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Arthur Laurents' classic musical, with Angels in America scribe Tony Kushner set to pen a new screenplay. Casting is currently underway, with calls taking place in New York, Orlando, Los Angeles, and Puerto Rico.
Peck serves as resident choreographer for the New York City Ballet, where he is also a soloist. His repertoire as a performer includes pieces by such choreographers as George Balanchine, Christopher Wheeldon, and original West Side Story director-choreographer Jerome Robbins.
In addition to its big screen return, West Side Story is also poised to play Broadway once more, with an Ivo van Hove-helmed revival slated to open in 2020.
