The BBC has released its teaser trailer for the upcoming series His Dark Materials, an adaptation from the British novel series of the same name by Sir Philip Pullman.
The series, which will be released by HBO in the U.S., stars Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (In The Heights, Hamilton, Mary Poppins Returns) as Lee Scoresby, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Tony nominee Ruth Wilson (Constellations, upcoming King Lear) as Marisa Coulter, and Clarke Peters as Dr. Carne. Produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema, the eight-part limited series comes from director Tom Hooper (Les Misérables film).
Pullman’s trilogy—consisting of Northern Lights (renamed The Golden Compass in North America), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass—chronicles the coming of age of Lyra and Will Parry as they wander through a series of parallel universes as a sort of re-telling of Paradise Lost.
Miranda’s character, Scoresby, is a balloonist in the novel; he guides Lyra in her journey to reach Lord Asriel’s residence in the North.
A premiere date for the series has not yet been announced, but it is expected (as is indicated in the teaser) to arrive 2019.
