Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Appropriate was named Best Revival of a Play at the Tony Awards, and that is truly something to celebrate.
Although Jacobs-Jenkins' acclaimed family drama has never been seen on Broadway before, the 11-year-old play was deemed eligible in the Revival of a Play category, having previously enjoyed numerous productions around the country and internationally. This is Jacobs-Jenkins' first Tony and his first play on Broadway, although he contributed additional material to the 2022 revival of The Skin of Our Teeth.
Backstage after his win, Jacobs-Jenkins' couldn't help but reflect on his first time watching the Tonys. "The first ever Tonys I watched was in 2002. It was the year that John Lithgow won for Sweet Smell of Success, And he did this," Jacobs-Jenkins spins the medallion at the center of his Tony while emphasizing the sheer weight of the award. "I just keep thinking, 'Is there some 13 year old out there right now, watching this going, 'I kind of want to be there?' That's the legacy of it."
See everything Jacobs-Jenkins had to say after accepting the honor in the video above, in an interview with Playbill's Jeffrey Vizcaíno!
