Video Video: New York City Center's Urinetown Is 'the Truth—With a Gag Attached to Everything'

Jordan Fisher, Keala Settle, Kevin Cahoon, and more are starring in the Encores! production.

The New York City Center Encores! production of Urinetown began its run February 5, with performances set to continue through February 16—meet the company and creatives in the video above. With a score by Tony winners Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis and a book by Kotis, Urinetown examines the darkest dilemmas of humanity, skewering everything from capitalism to environmental activism.

In star Jordan Fisher's words, "Urinetown is a fictitious town where you have to pay to pee. And if you are caught relieving yourself outside of a restroom, you will get captured, and you will get taken...you'll get got."

The starry company includes Fisher as Bobby Strong, Keala Settle as Penelope Pennywise, Stephanie Styles as Hope Cladwell, Rainn Wilson as Caldwell B. Cladwell, Christopher Fitzgerald as Officer Barrel, Greg Hildreth as Officer Lockstock, Tiffany Mann as Soupy Sue, Jenni Barber as Little Becky Two Shoes and Mrs. Millenium, Josh Breckenridge as Senator Fipp, Yeman Brown as Billy Boy Bill, Kevin Cahoon as Old Man Strong and Hot Blades Harry, Pearl Scarlett Gold as Little Sally, Jeff Hiller as Mr. McQueen, Daniel Quadrino as Robby the Stockfish, Myra Lucretia Taylor as Josephine Strong, and John Yi as Tiny Tom plus ensemble member Graham Rowat, who will also play Officer Lockstock February 14.

Urinetown played Broadway's Henry Miller's Theatre between August 2001 and January 2004. The production was nominated for nine 2002 Tony Awards, winning three: Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Musical Score, and Best Direction of a Musical. With several aspects of the work's subject matter dominating real-life headlines at present, the cast says the beloved musical is still relevant, even two decades later.

"This is the first time that I've actually ever seen the material so I can understand why [it endures]...especially in these times," Settle says. "There is joy, and tongue in cheek, and literally the truth—with a gag attached to everything."
