Theatre is back and bustling this season, with a handful of brand new plays having hit the Broadway stage. But it is the five plays nominated for the 2024 Tony Award for Best Play that are shining in the limelight this year. See clips from all of this year's Best Play nominees above.
Leading the nominations for plays this season with 13 nominations, including Best Play, is David Adjmi's newest play Stereophonic. Directed by Daniel Aukin, and featuring original music by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, Stereophonic transports audiences to a recording studio in 1976, where an up-and-coming rock band on the verge of superstardom exhibits the anguish and rapture of creation.
Another nominee is Jaja’s African Hair Braiding. Jocelyn Bioh's new play tells the story of Jaja’s bustling hair braiding salon in Harlem, where a tight-knit group of lively West African immigrant women confront what it means to be an outsider in the place they call home.
Additionally, nominated for Best Play this year is Mary Jane. The play, written by Amy Herzog, is about a mother learning how to navigate unimaginable circumstances through optimism, humor, and the wisdom of the women around her who become chosen family.
Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel's Mother Play is also up for the top honor. Set in 1962, just outside of D.C., Mother Play is a raucous and honest story about a mother and her two children unpacking the past.
The final nominee for this year's Best Play is Joshua Harmon's Prayer for the French Republic. Following five generations of a French Jewish family, Prayer For The French Republic is a sweeping examination of history, the effects of hatred, and finding home.
Winners will be named at the 77th Annual Tony Awards, set for June 16 at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater. The evening will kick off with The Tony Awards: Act One, streaming for free on Pluto TV. Details are to be announced. The 77th Annual Tony Awards will follow beginning at 8 PM ET, broadcasting live on CBS (check local listings) and streaming live (for premium-level subscribers) via Paramount+. All Paramount+ subscribers will have on demand access to the broadcast beginning June 17. Stage and screen star Ariana DeBose will be back for the third consecutive year to host.
