The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the first time this season, making eligibility decisions for Into the Woods; The Kite Runner; Leopoldstadt; Cost of Living; 1776; Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman; August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson; Suzan Lori-Parks’ Topdog/Underdog; Walking with Ghosts; Almost Famous; Kimberly Akimbo; Mike Birbiglia: The Old Man & The Pool; & Juliet; A Christmas Carol; KPOP; Ain’t No Mo’; A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical; Ohio State Murders; Some Like It Hot; and The Collaboration.

Eligibility for the various awards categories is usually determined based on opening-night billing as printed in the show's Playbill. The Administration Committee delivers rulings when producers request eligibility that differs from the show's billing or in situations where the billing makes the categorization more difficult, such as when a production's cast is billed completely in alphabetical order rather than having its leading stars at the top.

One of the decisions made at this first 2022-2023 meeting: Ohio State Murders will be be considered eligible in the Best Revival of a Play category. The recent production, led by six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald at the James Earl Jones Theatre, was the work's first on Broadway. The revival designation is being made because the play debuted and played enough significant regional and Off-Broadway productions so as to make it unusual to be going head-to-head with plays making their world premieres. Because the work has not previously been Tony eligible, a win in the revival category would be shared with the revival's producers and playwright Adrienne Kennedy. Best Play wins are shared between the work's producers and playwright, whereas revival wins typically only go to the production's producers.

The other rulings mostly relegated actor performances to either the leading or featured categories. Notably, Sharon D Clarke will be eligible in the featured category for her work in Death of a Salesman, and Some Like It Hot's Christian Borle, J. Harrison Ghee, and Adrianna Hicks will all be eligible in the leading categories; the ruling does not specify whether Ghee, who is non-binary and playing a non-binary role, will be eligible in the leading actor or actress category.

The committee also announced a revised rule, applying only to this season. In the 2022-2023 season, voters will be able to vote in categories in which they have not viewed up to one nominated performance, production, or creative element. Write-in votes will not be permitted. The rule is a shift from the typical stipulation that a voter must have seen all nominated elements to be eligible to vote in a category.

The 2022-2023 Tony Awards Administration Committee comprises Ted Chapin, Michael David, Sue Frost, John Gore, Calandra Hackney, Heather Hitchens, David Henry Hwang, Natasha Katz, Kenny Leon, Paul Libin, Kevin McCollum, Dessie Moynihan, Carl Mulert, James L. Nederlander, Laura Penn, Michael Price, Judith O. Rubin, Charlotte St. Martin, Peter Schneider, Thomas Schumacher, Ralph Sevush, Emilio Sosa, and David Stone.

As announced earlier this year, the 76th Annual Tony Awards will be hosted June 11 by the United Palace in New York City's Washington Heights for the first time in the awards' history. Productions that open by April 27, 2023, will be eligible for this year's awards, and nominations will be announced May 2. The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS and stream live (for premium-level subscribers) and on demand (for all subscribers beginning June 12) via Paramount+. Details on an accompanying special honoring the 2022-2023 Broadway season will be announced in the coming months.

The Tony Awards, founded by the American Theatre Wing in 1947, are co-presented by the Wing and The Broadway League, along with White Cherry Entertainment. Carnegie Mellon University, City National Bank, Playbill, Sofitel New York, and United Airlines are sponsors.
